Kan Bahlam I ( September 18, 524 - February 1, 583 ) was a ruler ( Ajaw ) of the Maya city of Palenque . He ruled from April 6, 572 until his death. He was the first ruler of Palenque to add the term k'inich ("radiant") associated with the sun god to his name .

Origin and family

Kan Bahlam I. was born on September 18, 524 ( long count 9.4.10.1.5, calendar round 11 Chikchan 13 Ch'en). Since he was born just one year after his predecessor Ahkal Mo 'Nahb II , it is generally assumed that he was his brother. The family relationship with his successor, Yohl Ik'nal, is unclear.

Reign

Ahkal Mo 'Nahb II died on July 21, 570 (9.6.16.10.7, 9 Manik' 5 Yaxk'in). Kan Bahlam I did not ascend the throne until almost two years later on April 6, 572 (9.6.18.5.12 10 Eb 0 weeks). An inscription from the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque shows that under his rule there were celebrations at the end of two calendar periods: on December 3, 573 (9.7.0.0.0) and on November 7, 578 (9.7.5.0.0). Further events from his reign are not known. He died on February 11, 583 (9.7.9.5.5 11 Chikchan 3 K'ayab) apparently without leaving a male heir. On December 23, 583, Yohl Ik'nal was the first woman to ascend the throne of Palenque.
