The Kanał Kula ( German  Kulla Canal ) is the shortest canal in the Masurian Lake District . It is 110 m long, 25 m wide and 2 m deep. The canal banks are reinforced with concrete edging.

location

The canal connects the Jadogne (Jagodner See / Kröstensee) with the Boczny ( Saitensee ), a bay of the Niegocin (Löwentinsee). A road bridge crosses the canal. The road branches off to the west from the country road between Kozin (Rodenau) and Bogaczewo (Reichensee) and leads to Rydzewo (Rotwalde) in the east .

history

A canal connection between the Löwentin - and the Spirdingsee was built after the Seven Years' War from 1764 to 1767 on the occasion of the reconstruction of East Prussia . During the time of their occupation of this province, the Russians had carried out considerable overexploitation in the northern forests. The construction of the canals should ensure that the unspoiled abundance of wood of the southern Masurian forests is available to the whole country.

Although construction was completed, the canals silted up and became impassable after a short time. It was not until Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Between 1845 and 1857 that the canals were reopened, finally opening up the Great Lakes area on waterways.

Worth mentioning

The Jagodner See / Kröstensee forms the watershed between the Pregel and Vistula tributaries , although due to the lack of a gradient there are certain currents to the north or south depending on the wind direction and strength. The lakes have an even level of 116 m above sea level.

Among the sailors who sail on the Masurian Lakes, following the pattern of equator baptism , there is the tradition of “baptizing” newcomers who cross this “border” for the first time.

There is a boat dock with a campsite on the east bank of the canal. In the nearby forest on the Kula peninsula there are well-preserved field fortifications from the First World War .
