Markku Tapio Larkio (born September 4,  1972 ) is a retired Finnish basketball player .

Life

The 2.03-meter-tall winger made his debut for LaNMKY in the Finnish first division ( Korisliiga ) in the 1991/92 season and in his first year was the same high performer for the Lahti- based team. For the 1993/94 season he left his home country for the United States and played for a year at Illinois State University in the NCAA . The Finn achieved an average of 10 points and 3.5 rebounds per encounter in 26 missions for the university team. Larkio made 46 three-point throws in the course of the season, making him the team's best long-range shooter. Larkio later recalled, however, that he decided not to take advantage of his four-year scholarship after a year, because, among other things, the military-style training methods and rules of conduct did not appeal to him.

He returned to LaNMKY and recommended himself through good performances for the Finnish national team, with which he took part in the European Championship in 1995 and scored 5.5 points per encounter during the tournament. In 1996 he moved to TTL Bamberg in the basketball league and posted an average of 11.2 points per use during the 1996/97 season. In his second year in Bamberg, his point yield fell to 8.5 per game. Since Larkio sustained an injury, the Franconians decided against a further commitment. After recovering, he played again for LaNMKY before returning to the Bundesliga in 1999, where he was under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2001 . His two years in the Rhineland were followed by three more in Lower Saxony , Larkio played from 2001 to 2004 for the Braunschweig team, who were then changing team names . In 2003 he narrowly missed the entry into the final series for the German championship with the Lower Saxony. Then Larkio, who played 85 full internationals for Finland, ended his professional career. During his career, the winger was known in particular as a specialist in distance throws and as a team player and combative. After the end of his playing days, he began to study economics in Helsinki and then worked first in a management consulting firm, then for the Finnish branch of a German chain of stores and later in the finance department of an IT company.
