The Wessem – Niederweert Canal (Dutch spelling: Kanaal Wessem – Nederweert ) is an artificially created waterway between Nederweert and Wessem in the Dutch province of Limburg . The waterway connects the canals of Zuid-Willemsvaart and Noordervaart to the north with the Meuse to the south . It is 17 km long and can be used by vessels of inland waterway class Va with maximum dimensions of 137.5 × 15.5 × 3.2 meters. The canal, which was opened on October 22, 1929, is 2.5 to 2.65 meters deep and has a storage target of 28.65 meters above NAP . The canal's only lock complex is at Panheel .
