The University of Kanazawa ( Jap. 金沢大学 , Kanazawa daigaku , short Kindai ( 金大 )) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is located in Kakuma-machi, Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture .
history
The university was founded in 1862 as an institution for smallpox vaccination ( 種痘 所 , Shutō-sho ) by Kaga - Han . In 1876 it became a medical school from Ishikawa Prefecture. In 1887 it became the Medical Faculty of the State Fourth Higher Middle School ( 第四 高等 中 学校 医学 部 , Dai-shi kōtō chūgakkō igakubu ) and then in 1894 to the Medical Faculty of the State Fourth High School ( 第四 高等学校 医学 部 , Dai-shi kōtō gakkō igakubu ).
In 1901 it developed into the Kanazawa Medical School ( 金 沢 医学 専 門 学校 , Kanazawa igaku semmon gakkō ) and then in 1923 to the Kanazawa Medical School ( 金 沢 医科大学 , Kanazawa ika daigaku ). The Takaramachi Tsuruma campus has been the headquarters of the hospital since 1905.
The prefectural and municipal governments wanted to keep Kanazawa Imperial University (the Medical School as their medical school); the state university was not realized before the Pacific War .
In 1949 Kanazawa University was formed through the merger of Kanazawa Medical School and five state technical schools:
- the fourth high school ( 第四 高等学校 , Dai-shi kōtō gakkō , founded in 1887),
- the normal school Ishikawa ( 石川 師範学校 , Ishikawa shihan gakkō , founded 1874),
- the normal youth school Ishikawa ( 石川青 年 師範学校 , Ishikawa his shihan gakkō , founded 1918),
- Kanazawa Higher Normal School ( 金 沢 高等 師範学校 , Kanazawa kōtō shihan gakkō , founded in 1944) and
- the Kanazawa technical center ( 金 沢 工業 専 門 学校 , Kanazawa kōgyō semmon gakkō , founded in 1920).
The former main building of the Fourth High School (built 1891) is the memorial museum of the Fourth High School ( 石川 四 高 記念 文化交流 館 , 36 ° 33 ′ 45 ″ N , 136 ° 39 ′ 20.7 ″ E ).
The main campus of Kanazawa University was first in the former Kanazawa Castle. In 1989 the larger Kakuma campus was opened and in 1994 the headquarters moved to the new campus.
