Kandelmarsch 2004

The Kandelmarsch is a tradition that goes back over 80 years at the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences and is mainly organized by the Esslingen student associations . In Swabian, the area between the curb and the street, the gutter, is called "Kandel" .

At the end of the summer semester, all graduates of the current and the previous semester are invited to take part in a march through Esslingen's old town. Traditionally, the participants appear in tails and top hats and with a wooden ladder for each group.

The professors take a seat in a horse-drawn carriage that leads the entire train. The students follow in groups, marching one foot on the sidewalk and one foot on the street. They each carry a beer mug that is handed out in advance.

In certain pubs in Esslingen there is free beer for all participants on the day of the Kandelmarsch .

history

According to a witness from 1922, this tradition originated from a group of students who, for some unexplained reason, wanted to transport a ladder after a happy evening in one of Esslingen's many pubs . They were first asked by a law enforcement officer to go to the sidewalk, and then by another to use the street. Arguing would have been taken as disturbing the night's sleep and so they continued their march with one foot on the sidewalk and one on the street.
