Kandil Gecesi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Kandil Gecesi ( "Kandil Evening" or "Kandil Night"), certain Muslims as sacred viewed evenings or nights, respectively. These are the nights of Kadir Gecesi , Mevlit Kandili , Regaib Kandili (conception, the first night on Friday in the month of Rajab ), Mi'rac Kandili and Berat Kandili (the night of the call to the prophet).

The name is derived from the festive lighting of the mosques on such evenings. This was common in the Ottoman Empire since Selim II . These evenings play an important role in the religious life of many Muslims , in addition to the festival of breaking the fast after Ramadan and the festival of sacrifice .

The word kandil means "candle" or "candlestick" and is a loan word. Kandil comes from the Latin word candela and was borrowed into Turkish via the Arabic qindīl .
