Kani Alavi ( listen ? / I ; * 1955 in Lahidschan , Iran ) is a German- Iranian artist . Audio file / audio sample

Career

Alavi graduated from high school in 1979. In 1980 he moved to Berlin, where he studied painting with Klaus Fußmann at the Hochschule der Künste . In 1986 he became a master student at Fußmann. From 1986 he studied visual communication with Ludwig Thürmer at the Hochschule der Künste .

In 1990 he was one of the artists who later painted parts of the Berlin Wall known as the East Side Gallery . Since 1996 he has been the initiator of the East Side Gallery artists' initiative.

Alavi has already designed a United Buddy Bear twice (2002 and 2003) for his home country Iran and was also involved in this international art project in the following years.

Honors

In 2011 Alavi was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his great commitment to the creation, maintenance and reconstruction of the largest open-air gallery in the world . At the end of March 2013, he announced that he would return his award in protest against the further demolition of the East Side Gallery.
