Kanka (* 1977 as Alexis Langlois ) is a French dub musician from Rouen . The name Kanka comes from Turkish and means buddy or best friend .

Kanka's musical career began in 1997 as a percussionist with the French reggae band King Riddim . Through his self-produced solo album Every Night's Dub ... the Parisian label Hammerbass noticed him in 2003 and signed him. In the following years, pieces by Kanka first appeared on French dub compilations. In 2004 he participated again in an album by King Riddim. Kanka has been releasing solo albums since 2005 and has remained loyal to the Hammerbass label. In 2010 he released a dubstep album under the project name Alek 6 . In 2012 he played at the Vieilles Charrues Festival , the largest French music festival. In 2012 and 2016 he performed at the Dour Festival .

style

Kanka is at home in the dub sub-genre Dub Stepper . He cites British and Jamaican dub as role models. Kanka performs live with singer MC Olivia, techno DJ Chris B on bass and other guest musicians. He is a multi-instrumentalist; In addition to keyboards and synthesizers, he also plays drums and bass. In a review of Dub magazine Dubmassive's Watch Your Step album , Kanka's pieces were described as "heavy, consistent compositions" with "devastating bass lines".
