Chapel on the Werth

The Roman Catholic Chapel Auf dem Werth is a listed building in the town of Schmallenberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The chapel was donated in 1682 by the Cordes couple after a flood of the Lennes. The building is a small single-nave, two-bay hall church with a small baroque altar. It was built on the site where the “Narrow Castle”, the nucleus of the town of Schmallenberg, probably stood. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint John the Evangelist.

In 1956 the Schützengesellschaft Schmallenberg provided the money for the purchase of a new bell with the inscription “Saint Valentin, city patron, please for us, 1956 Schützengesellschaft Schmallenberg 1820 e. V. " available. The chapel has served as a memorial to the city's war dead since 1961. In 1977 the Schützengesellschaft took care of the memorial site. The small bell tower was renovated in 2011 by members of the Schützengesellschaft themselves.

A replica of the chapel is located in Schmnallenberg on Grafschafter Straße.
