Chapel on the Schlade

The Catholic Chapel Auf der Schlade is a listed church building in Calle , a district of Meschede in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The chapel dedicated to St. Mary probably belonged to the Count 's Laer Castle when it was founded . On the basis of a foundation in 1779 by the Prince-Bishop Friedrich Wilhelm von Westphalen , the Laerer chaplain should celebrate a few masses every year. The chapel has been owned by the parish of St. Severinus in Calle since 1913 at the latest. The walls are structured by ogival windows . After the building fell into disrepair, it was extensively renovated in 1993 and re-inaugurated in 1995. The three figures stolen in 1971 were also replaced as part of the altar restoration.

The octagonal building made of natural stone with a curved slate roof and the closed drum with a bell roof was built with a careful roof construction in the style of the Hessian-Sauerland baroque.

Similarities with other church buildings in the urban area of Meschede

Similar to the chapel of St. Lucia in Erflinghausen and the chapel of the 14 helpers in need in Remblinghausen, this one too has an octagonal floor plan, is roofed, slated and crowned with a baroque dome with a lantern. All three chapels are in the urban area of Meschede, and they were probably built under the direction of the same builder.
