Chalières chapel
The Romanesque chapel of Chalières (formerly called Saint-Pierre) is located in a cemetery southwest of Moutier on the road to Perrefitte . It was inaugurated in 1019 in the presence of Emperor Heinrich II . It is a testimony to the transition from the Ottonian to the Romanesque style in western Switzerland and may have served as a church for the Moutier-Grandval monastery .
The simple floor plan consists of a rectangular nave with an apse that is raised by a roof turret. The apse calotte is decorated with significant wall paintings. The blessing Christ in the aureole (so-called Maiestas Domini) is surrounded by the twelve apostles with the four evangelist symbols. At the apex of the triumphal arch, the beardless Christ is depicted in a medallion. On the left Abel offers a lamb, on the right Cain holds a sheaf of ears.
