Fourteen Holy Helpers Chapel

The Catholic chapel for the 14 helpers in need is a listed building in Remblinghausen , a district of the city of Meschede in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The building was erected in 1713 on the site of a previous chapel. The previous St. Agatha chapel Zum Engeln Krahn was mentioned in a debtor register from 1684. There is no documentary evidence of the construction time. The name Zum Engeln Krahn is still not meaningfully interpreted. By the end of the 20th century, the chapel was vaguely assumed to be the end of the 18th century. During the restoration in 1983, wood studies at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier clearly revealed the age. Accordingly, the oak was felled in 1712 and lumbered in the same year. The chapel was certainly completed the following year.

Furnishing

  • The figures of the 14 emergency helpers were carved from 1722 to 1723, according to an invoice dated January 27, 1723. The performing artist was probably Johann Bernhard Hense from Meschede, who acquired Rüthen citizenship in 1696.
  • The first bell was cast by the bell founder Johannes Fuchs in 1753 and consecrated to St. Lucia. Due to severe cracks, it was replaced in 1921 by a bell with the inscription Ave Maria .

Similarities with other church buildings in the urban area of Meschede

Similar to the St. Lucia chapel in Erflinghausen and the chapel on the Schlade in Calle, this one too has an octagonal floor plan, is roofed, slated and crowned with a baroque dome with a lantern. All three chapels are in the urban area of Meschede, and they were probably built under the direction of the same builder.
