The sawmill is a listed secular building in Remblinghausen , a district of Meschede in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

A mill has been documented here since 1671. It is believed that the sawmill existed earlier. In 1809 Theodor von Cloidt had the oldest part of the sawmill still standing today built. The single-storey, mostly boarded-up half-timbered building is marked on the front with the year 1809. The gate room has been located in this part of the building since then . The mill operator, Ludwig Steilmann, bought the sawmill, house, mill pond and farmland from Theodor von Cloidt for 833 thalers in 1844. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the mill was expanded to include two-story extensions, such as the wheelwright workshop, at the rear. The water wheel was replaced by the turbine house in 1929 . The system is an unusual ensemble in Westphalia of machines from the wood processing industry and threshing technology from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Operations ceased in 1983. In 1987 the sawmill was listed as a historical monument. In 1994 the owner Gerda Schulte made the mill available to the Sägemühlenverein Remblinghausen eV as part of a usage contract. The restoration work and a flyer (cultural monument "Alte Sägemühle") were funded by the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation for Nature Conservation, Heritage and Cultural Preservation. The sawmill association also offers guided tours.
