Capillary storage tanks are used to store and dispense liquids in a controlled manner .

They consist of a material interspersed with small, interconnected cavities and a cover. A widespread use case are the ink stores in writing implements , which are also called "tampons" in the industry. They are cylindrical in shape and have a diameter between 5 and 17 mm and a length between 50 and 120 mm. A core of polyester or cellulose acetate fibers , which are mainly oriented in the longitudinal direction, is enclosed by a film that is usually made of polypropylene . The tampons are manufactured in an endless process and cut to length. They are open at the front and back so that ink can be removed.
