Kaptol is the historic city center of Zagreb , the capital of Croatia . Kaptol is also home to the Zagreb Cathedral , the main church of the Archdiocese of Zagreb .

history

The name Kaptol , derived from the Latin word for chapter , capitulum , was used for the first time in 1094 when King Ladislaus I founded the diocese of Zagreb. The bishop's residence and cathedral were located in the south-eastern part of Kaptol. Vlaška Ves (now Vlaška Street), a village suburb that belonged to the bishop of the Zagreb diocese, was southeast of the cathedral. It was first mentioned in 1198. Kaptol Street still exists today and is the main street of Kaptol. It leads from north to south to today's Bakačeva Street and Ban Jelačić Square . The houses of the canons used to be on this street.

The cathedral was built in 1217 but badly damaged by the Tatars in 1242 . It was restored and rebuilt in 1263. Kaptol was rectangular, with the southern gate on Bakačeva Street and the northern gate on Degen Street, where the Miroslav Krleža Elementary School (named after the writer Miroslav Krleža ; colloquially Kaptol School) is located today.

In the Middle Ages , Kaptol had no defense system, only wooden picket fences that were destroyed and rebuilt several times. The first true walls and towers around Kaptol were built between 1469 and 1473. The Prislin Tower near the Kaptol School is one of the well-preserved towers from that period. In 1493 the Ottomans advanced as far as Sisak . That is why the Zagreb bishop built a defensive structure around the cathedral and his residence between 1512 and 1520. All walls except the wall in front of the cathedral are still standing today. The latter was destroyed when Kaptol was rebuilt in 1907.

Two Gothic churches were built in Kaptol in the 13th century : St. Frank's Church ( Franciscan ) and St. Mary's Church. The St. Maria Church was rebuilt several times in the 17th and 18th centuries. On Opatovina Street you can still see the small old houses of the canons, but on Dolac in 1926 several alleys and small streets were destroyed in order to build a market. In 1334, the Kaptol canons established a serf colony north of Kaptol. This colony became Nova Ves Street.

Kaptol is now part of the Gornji Grad-Medveščak district . It is on Kaptol Street and Ribnjak Park is east of it. The Kaptol Centar ( shopping mall ) is located in Kaptol on Nova Ves and Tkalčićeva streets.
