Karean Synagogue (Hasköy, Istanbul)
The Karaean Synagogue ( Turkish Karaim Sinagogu , Karay Sinagogu , also Kol Kadosh Kushta ) is a Kenessa , a synagogue of the Karaites , in the Hasköy district of Beyoğlu in Istanbul . The building was in ruins in the 16th century, but was restored in 1536. In 1729 the synagogue burned down and had to be rebuilt. In 1774 the building burned down again and was only rebuilt between 1776 and 1780. After the building was renovated in 1842, it last caught fire in 1918.
It is used by the Jewish Karaites, some of whom used to speak the Jevan language . The Karaean Synagogue is only open on a few public holidays and special occasions. The congregation has shrunk to a few members. The kenessa is hardly used anymore. The last wedding ceremony took place here in 1999.
The associated foundation is called Hasköy Türk Karaim Musevi Sinagogu Vakfı .
