The Karachi Circular Railway is a partially disused circular railway in Karachi , the former capital of Pakistan .
history
The oldest part of the Karachi Circular Railway is the Karachi City – Drigh Road section, which is formed by the railway line to Kotri that was opened in 1861 . In 1964, the 25.56 northern section of Drigh Road – Wazir Mansion was opened, followed in 1970 by the section between Wazir Mansion and Karachi City, which closed the last gap in the ring.
In 1984 the Karachi Circular Railway carried 600,000 passengers, after which the passenger frequency fell steadily due to poor operational management. In January 2000 the company was closed.
In 2004 the Prime Minister at the time set up a working group for the reconstruction of the Ringbahn. In February 2016 the government decided to rebuild the railway with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). A loan of two billion US dollars was granted for the project . For the reconstruction, 2500 houses have to give way and 4500 families have to be relocated.
Route
The Karachi Circular Railway runs from Karachi City initially parallel to the main line to Peshawar . At Drigh Road stop, it branches off the main line in a tight arc and heads north to Hill View stop. The route then heads west and crosses the Lyari River between the Gilani and Ysinabad stops. After Baldia, the route heads east again and crosses the Lyari River again before reaching its starting point in Karachi City.
