Karel Sláma (born December 17, 1934 in Tichá ) is a Czech entomologist . He worked at the Institute of Entomology of the Czech Academy of Sciences .

Sláma did her PhD in 1961 with VJA Novák . He then received a research grant for the USA.

Together with Carroll Williams he discovered the Juvabion by chance . Sláma brought larvae of the fire bug from Prague to Harvard University in 1964 . These did not change into the adult form after the 5th larval stage, but instead entered an extraordinary 6th and sometimes even 7th larval stage. In 1965 this could be traced back to a paper made from balsam fir wood used for feeding . That is why they named the substance "Paper Factor".
