Karel Stretti

Karel Stretti (born June 29, 1943 in Prague ; † March 24, 2018 there ) was a Czech restorer .

Life

Karel Stretti, son of the painter and graphic artist Mario Stretti and descendant of an Italian family from Piedmont, who settled in Bohemia in 1789, was an internationally sought-after restorer. He studied painting and graphics with Vojtěch Tittelbach at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague . He then focused on the restoration of paintings by Bohuslav Slánský , the founder of the Czech restoration school. He followed this in the direction of the restoration school at the Academy of Fine Arts. Until its closure in 2017, he headed the Atelier for Restoration of Fine Arts and Polychrome Sculpture (Karel Stretti School).

He was involved in the UNESCO rescue operation after the flood in Florence in 1966. In 2005 he and his team were honored with the Europa Nostra Prize and in 2006 he was awarded the Czech State Prize for Monument Protection.

The works of Viktor Stretti, Jaromír Stretti-Zamponi and Mario Stretti are exhibited in the Stretti Gallery , managed by the Czech National Monument Institute , in the Plasy Monastery in western Bohemia .
