The Karelian Isthmus ( Russian Карельский перешеек Karelski pereschejek , Finnish Karjalankannas , Swedish Karelska näset ) is an isthmus in northwestern Russia . The 45 to 110 kilometer wide strip of land is located northwest of Saint Petersburg between the Gulf of Finland in the southwest and Lake Ladoga in the northeast. The isthmus belongs to the historical region of Karelia and, to a lesser extent, to Ingermanland . The area changed hands several times in the course of its history between Russia, Sweden and Finland ; today it belongs to the Russian Leningrad Oblast .
