Karl-Axel Ekbom

Karl-Axel Ekbom (born September 23, 1907 in Gothenburg , † March 15, 1977 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish neurologist . The name in common use today for restless legs syndrome goes back to him , which he described and examined in several case series .

Life

Ekbom was born the son of a general practitioner in Gothenburg . He completed his medical studies at the Karolinska Institute in 1934 and then worked in hospitals in Gothenburg and Stockholm . In 1945 he was charged with a thesis on the restless legs syndrome doctorate . From 1937 to 1958 he was a neurologist at Serafimerlasarettet in Stockholm. From 1945 to 1957, Karl-Axel Ekbom was professor of neurology at the Karolinska Institute. In 1958 he became the first professor of neurology at Uppsala University . In 1974 Ekbom retired.

Ekbom had been married since 1931 and had three sons, including the neurologist Karl Ekbom junior .

Act

In 1945 Ekbom coined the term “ Restless Legs Syndrome ” in his doctorate , a disease that he had investigated in case series and which was a focus of his interest throughout his life.

The dermatozoal delusion he described in 1938 is sometimes referred to as "Ekbom syndrome".
