history

The now two-story house was built around 1800. The building experienced its political and cultural importance for the community around 1800 as the restaurant Zum Deutschen Kaiser . Later, with the Soviet occupation of Calvörde, it became a cultural center for the local population. The house was named after the socialist Karl Liebknecht and has since been one of the most important meeting rooms in Calvörde. Only here, from June 24th to 28th, 1948, could the old Reichsmark be exchanged for the new Ostmark at a ratio of 10: 1. During the GDR era , the KL building was also one of the four polling stations , where votes were held for the People's Chamber and for the council of the community. At the beginning of the sixties, its cultural significance consisted of giving those residents of the community who did not yet have their own television the opportunity to watch the pictures of GDR television here in the publicly accessible television room. The TV room was on the ground floor of the KL building, its basic equipment was rather modest and consisted of a television set, several chairs and tables and a piano . The premises were also used for the local Polytechnic High School (POS). After the political change in the GDR, the premises were no longer used for political and cultural purposes. Today there are several apartments in the KL building.
