Karl Ackermann , baptized as Carl Christian, (born March 2, 1841 in Fulda ; died April 23, 1903 in Niederzwehren ) was a German teacher and naturalist.

life and work

Training and educational career

Carl Christian Ackermann was born in Fulda in 1841 and attended the grammar school there from 1851 to 1860. From 1860 he first studied medicine and then natural sciences and mathematics at the universities of Munich and Marburg . In 1864 he passed the theoretical examination for applicants for a full teaching post at learned schools in mathematics and the natural sciences as major subjects and in the old classical languages ​​as a minor, in the following year he was awarded a doctorate with a thesis on the subject of “About the content and surface of rotational solids” . phil. PhD . After completing his studies, he did an internship at the grammar school in Fulda and then went on to teach at the secondary school in Hersfeld . In the summer of 1866 he passed the practical teacher examination, through which he acquired the license to teach mathematics and the natural sciences for all classes and in Latin and Greek for the lower classes. He stayed in Hersfeld until 1875, after which he went to the high school in Kassel, which later became the Realschule and Oberrealschule. In 1888 he became the headmaster of the school and managed it until 1895, when he resigned from his position for health reasons.

Activities as a naturalist

Ackermann managed the secondary school library from 1876 to 1888 and, in addition to his school activities, was managing director of the Natural History Association in Cassel from 1878 to 1891. After that he was a member of the board of the association until 1999 in alternating functions as vice chairman, accounting officer or librarian. The association elected Ackermann as an honorary member on June 8, 1891, and as its honorary chairman on April 19, 1899. On May 1, 1870, he was appointed a corresponding member of the Association for Natural History in Fulda and on January 5, 1884, of the Wetterau Society for all natural sciences in Hanau. The Numismatic Society in Vienna also made him an honorary member.

Ackermann wrote a number of regional historical and natural history works, including the Bibliotheca Hessiaca from 1884 to 1899 : Repertory of regional literature , 1896 a biography of Dr. Johannes Gundlach , a Hessian natural scientist in Cuba (appeared in treatises and reports of the Verein für Naturkunde in Cassel 41 , 1896) and 1898 animal bastards: compilation of previous observations on hybridization in Thierreich, together with references to literature in two volumes. From 1887 to 1895 he was also the author of the essays and reports of the Natural History Association in Kassel several times . In addition, he published in numerous other journals of natural history, regional history and as a coin collector and numismatist also in the monthly journal of the Numismatic Society in Vienna.

After his retirement, Ackermann was elected to the magistrate of Kassel and worked there particularly in the city debt deputation. He managed the Bose Museum and wrote its catalog as well as the Glässner Foundation, whose coin collection he organized. Karl Ackermann died on April 23, 1903 in Niederzwehren, which was incorporated into the city of Kassel in 1936.
