Karl Derntl (born August 12, 1918 in Linz ; † May 20, 1975 ) was an Upper Austrian musician and composer .

Live and act

Karl Derntl grew up in St. Georgen an der Gusen with his musical family. His brother Franz taught him to play the violin and later he studied trumpet at the Anton Bruckner Conservatory of Upper Austria . His dream was to become a circus musician . In 1938 and during the Second World War he was used as 1st trumpeter in an infantry regiment . Comradeships with well-known musicians were decisive for his further musical studies, for example the composition theory with Professor Jaerger.

After his return from captivity , he moved to Steyregg , married and had the children Martha and Karl. He was able to combine his professional activity at VÖEST with his musical talent and he played in the works orchestra and the Steyregg flugelhorn .

From 1948 he was the deputy bandmaster responsible for the training of young musicians, partly creating teaching materials himself (wind instrument school, scale studies). In 1966, two years after completing his apprenticeship as a conductor, after the death of Sadtkapellmeister Max Geiblinger, he took over the leadership of the Steyregg city band, whose musicians can look back with him on successes at competitions, trips to Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

In addition to arranging numerous works for brass music, Karl Derntl composed songs, character pieces, two overtures , a Cecilia Mass for brass music and marches, some of which became very popular.
