The Tattoo Magazine has been published by Günter Brecht since April 1994. It mainly reported on tattoo artists and scene events in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as developments and events in other European countries, the USA and Asia. Heide Heim took over the editor-in-chief when it was founded, Dirk-Boris Rödel was editor -in- chief from 1999 , he was replaced by Boris Glatthaar in 2017.

Reports on traditional tattooing practices of indigenous peoples in Asia, South America or Africa are another part of the tattoo magazine. Since 2004 the young tattoo artist of the year has been chosen annually in a readers' poll. In every issue of the tattoo magazine, the meanings and backgrounds of various tattoo motifs were explained and athletes and musicians with tattoos were presented. The TätowierMagazin was also quite hiphop -affin. In 2008 Azad , 2010 Sido , 2011 Casper and 2017 Kontra K were reported. Some of these German rappers could be seen with their tattoos on the cover of the magazine.

After Huber Verlag filed for bankruptcy on February 4th, it was announced on June 29th, 2020, in a message from the magazine on Facebook , that Huber Verlag will be closed and the tattoo magazine will be discontinued.

The tattoo magazine was also involved in tattoo conventions such as B. at the annual Tattoomenta in Kassel . The TM junior contest was held there. The TM editors selected the ten semi-finalists from the applications submitted by readers, who then stood for election. Three chosen then competed against each other at the Tattoomenta in Kassel.

The Tattoo Magazine also published the magazines Tattoo Motive - the magazine for top motifs and Tattoo Erotica .

Since 2018, the tattoo magazine has also offered information as a podcast , the Tattoocast . Editor-in-chief Boris Glatthaar and editor Jula Reichard talk about technical questions about the topic of tattoos, there was news from the studios and expert interviews on important tattoo topics.

In issue 07/20 (# 293) on June 19, 2020, the tattoo magazine reported for the first time extensively on the topic of " Piercing Knowledge": Piercing in Germany then and now: pioneers and big names in the scene such as Studio Trust, jewelry manufacturer Wildcat and piercer Horst Linienbach , an interview with Manfred Kohrs .
