Karl Gramberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Gramberg (* 1922 in Aurich ; † 1997 or 1998 ) was an East Frisian painter and graphic artist.

Born in Aurich, “Kalli”, his nickname, learned the art of painting from his father Enno Gramberg at an early age. Like Karl, his brother Gerd (1923–2013), who was one year younger than him, was born with painting. Both brothers developed their own painting styles, Karl painted more graphically, Gerd developed an expressionist painting style. While Karl preferred to create paintings in oil or tempera with East Frisian motifs, Gerd painted more in the Oldenburger Land (where he worked as a surveyor for the cadastral authority) and in various places on the coast. After his retirement in 1984, Karl Gramberg devoted himself to the history of his beloved hometown and wrote three books. Just two days after his 76th birthday, Karl Gramberg suffered a stroke at the train station in Leer . His brother Gerd lived secluded in Oldenburg. An eye ailment forced him to give up painting in the late 1990s. On the occasion of his 85th birthday in November 2008, his hometown Aurich organized a large exhibition with works by the Gramberg family.
