Karl Hans Wedepohl

Karl Hans Wedepohl (born January 6, 1925 in Loxten ; † May 19, 2016 ) was a German geochemist . He was a professor of geochemistry at the University of Göttingen .

Wedepohl studied mineralogy in Göttingen from 1946. He received his doctorate in 1951 with a thesis on the geochemistry of zinc. In 1956, he also completed his habilitation in Göttingen on the geochemistry of lead. He was appointed to the first professorship for geochemistry in Göttingen in 1964. He studied the chemical composition of the continental crust and was co-editor of the Handbook of Geochemistry . Since 1987 he has also dealt with medieval and antique glass from archaeological finds.

In 2005 he became an honorary member of the German Mineralogical Society , from which he had received the Abraham Gottlob Werner Medal in 1996 . He had been a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences since 1970 .
