Karl Strobach senior (* before 1850 in Tschachowitz ; † September 17, 1905 near Dubrovnik ) was a German-Moravian engineer and director of the Olleschau paper mill in Olleschau / Moravia .

Life

As a young engineer, Karl Strobach worked in the factory for writing, printing and packaging paper built by the Schmidt brothers in Olleschau on the site of the former princely Liechtenstein grinding mill. This got into economic difficulties in 1864 and was taken over by a stock corporation. In order to avert the impending bankruptcy, Karl Strobach developed a project for the production of cigarette paper in 1870 . This was successfully implemented by him.

In the second half of the 1970s, the cigarette paper from Olleschau had already acquired a unique reputation at home and abroad. As a result of his work, the Olleschau paper factory received the honorary award of the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Commerce in Vienna in 1879 for the collection of its products .

In 1880 Karl Strobach was appointed director of the Olleschau AG paper mill. Under his leadership, the company rose to become the sole supplier of the Imperial and Royal Austrian Tobacco Directorate until 1885 , held monopoly positions in Serbia and Greece and was linked to the Royal Hungarian and Bosnian Tobacco Directorates through long-term contracts . The Olleschau AG paper mill received a gold medal at the Antwerp World Exhibition in 1885 and the Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 . At that time, Director Karl Strobach was awarded the great gold medal ad personam.

After it was discovered in September 1905 in the course of an audit of the balance sheet that Strobach had diverted money from the company over many years and brought the company to the verge of bankruptcy, he fled and jumped from a ship into the vicinity of Dubrovnik Sea suicide.

After his death, his son Karl Strobach junior , who had previously worked for the company, took over.
