Karula (German: Karolen ) was a rural community in the Estonian district of Valga with an area of 230 km². It had 1,025 inhabitants (January 1, 2011).
In addition to the main town of Lüllemäe, the municipality included the villages of Kaagjärve, Karula, Kirbu, Koobassaare, Käärikmäe, Londi, Lusti, Pikkjärve, Pugritsa, Raavitsa, Rebasemõisa, Valtina and Vahu.
The Karula National Park with its untouched forests, moors and lakes is particularly interesting for nature lovers.
Until 1919 the castle and the Karolen estate (along with large land and forest holdings, moors and lakes) belonged to the German-Baltic von Grote family. The estate was founded in 1741. Heinrich von Grote was the last majorate at Karolen Castle. After the revolutionary turmoil of 1917, the family's estates and property, which also included other estates such as Grotenhof, Kawershof, Langensee and Repsberg, were expropriated by the Estonian state. Karolen Castle was burned down in 1919. In the same year Heinrich von Grote and his family left the Baltic States and emigrated to Germany via Finland. The German film director and writer Alexandra von Grote is a granddaughter of Heinrich von Grote.
