Kasiviswanathan Shanmugam (born March 26, 1959 in Singapore ), better known as K. Shanmugam , is a Singaporean politician and former lawyer. As a member of the ruling party for popular actions ( PAP ), he has been Minister of Law since May 2008 and Minister of Interior since October 2015. Previously, he was Foreign Minister for a short time from November 2010 to May 2011 from May 2011 to September 2015. He has been a member of parliament since 1988 and represents the constituency of the Sembawang GRC (1988-2011) and the constituency of the Nee Soon GRC (since 2011) serving the Chong Pang Ward in both constituencies.

education

Shanmugam was educated at the Raffles Institution from 1972 to 1977 before attending the Law School of the National University of Singapore where he received an LL.B. graduated (first class honors) in 1984.

Early career

After Shanmugam was admitted to the Singapore bar and bar in 1985, he was admitted to the Singapore law firm Allen & Gledhill as Senior Partner and Head of Litigation and Dispute Resolution .

Shanmugam had a successful practice and has been recognized in various international publications as one of the best litigation, arbitration and bankruptcy attorneys in Asia. During his private practice, he regularly practiced legal proceedings in major corporate, commercial and bankruptcy disputes for private and public companies, major international and Singaporean banking and financial institutions, multinational corporations and professional practices.

In 1998, Shanmugam became one of the youngest attorneys to be named Senior Counsel to the Supreme Court at the age of 38 .

Life

Shanmugam served as a MP and practiced as a lawyer until 2008. He was then appointed to the cabinet to replace S. Jayakumar as Minister of Justice. He was appointed second minister of the interior until 2010, and succeeded Wong Kan Seng as minister of the interior in 2010 .

After the 2011 general election, Shanmugam resigned his mandate as Minister of the Interior and was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, while continuing to serve as Minister of Justice. Since 2015, his post has been transferred back to Minister of the Interior and Minister of Law.

After Shanmugam's comments on changes to the eligibility criteria for the elected presidency of Singapore, he was criticized by former presidential candidate Tan Cheng Bock for anticipating the legislative process and the presidential election committee, which determines the suitability of candidates for the presidential elections in Singapore.

In February 2018, Shanmugam announced that Singapore would amend its criminal trust violations (CBT) laws to address concerns that charity directors and officers would receive fewer harsh maximum sentences for CBT crimes than their employees.

Shanmugam was a member of the Select Committee on Deliberate Online Falsehoods , where he interviewed Simon Milner, Facebook's Vice President of Public Policy for Asia Pacific , about Cambridge Analytica's misuse of online data .
