Cassette gear
A cassette transmission is a method of construction of transmissions in which the two main shafts - each with the number of gears corresponding to the number of gears - and their storage as a whole can be removed with little assembly effort.
In contrast to this, conventional gears are usually closed and connected to the engine or drive train in such a way that the gear wheels are only accessible after the entire unit has been removed and dismantled in a time-consuming process.
Advantages of cassette gears are:
- Easy change of gear ratios , for example to match a certain (racing) track
- Rapid inspection of damage and appropriate repairs
- Low assembly effort in production
This may be offset by higher construction and production costs as well as higher weight and space requirements.
Cassette gearbox are mainly in motor sports used -cars, but are now also in Supersport - motorcycles introduced in series production.
