Castigator (from Latin castigare , to improve) is an occupation of the 15th century: In the incunable period , castigators performed roughly the tasks of modern editors .

Specified in the order of today "Inkunabeldrucker" former publisher sought Kastigatoren suitable for printing manuscripts , took their editors for printing before, corrected the artwork and advised the publisher. Castigators received a fee for their work. This payment is now considered to be the forerunner of the first author's fees .
