Cataclase
The cataclase (older Greek κατάκλασις, katáklasis , "breaking", "breaking") is a technical term from geology .
It describes the frictional and breaking structures of individual minerals in a rock that have arisen through tectonic effects . Cataclase occurs in the vicinity of faults. Depending on the size of the fragments, a distinction is made between fault or fault breccias (macro area) and micro breccia (micro area). Rocks with a cataclastic structure are called cataclasites .
The pattern created by cataclasia is called cataclastic pattern (English: cataclastic fabric). If the breaking occurs before the final solidification of a magma, this is called a protoclase.
