The Catalan-language Wikipedia ( Catalan Viquipèdia en català ) is the edition of the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia in Catalan. It was founded on March 16, 2001 as the third language edition after the English version and a few hours after the German Wikipedia .

Starting position and development

On March 16, 2001, Jimmy Wales announced that he wanted to set up Wikipedias in different languages and added that there was also interest in a Catalan version. On the same day and within a few hours, the domains “deutsche.wikipedia.com” and “catalan.wikipedia.com” were registered. The first edits, possibly sample texts in English, have not been preserved. The Catalan-language main page was verifiably edited on March 16 at 21:07 UTC by the anonymous user 216.7.146.xxx.

The first article was "àbac" ( abacus ). It was docked on March 17th at 01:41 UTC. The IP of the anonymous user comes from Andorra.

The name of the domain changed to "ca.wikipedia.com" and later to "ca.wikipedia.org". After two years the Catalan name Viquipèdia was adopted. There are also the addresses «viquipedia.org» and «viquipedia .cat », which forward to «ca.wikipedia.org».

Like the German-language Wikipedia on March 21, 2019, the Catalan -language Wikipedia went offline for a day on March 25, 2019 in protest against the copyright reform of the European Union .
