Katharina de Fries (also Kathrina Bieg , Katharina Bieg-Defries ; born 1934 in Gelnhausen , Hesse), died August 5, 2019 in Saint-Lô was a left activist of the student movement , bank robber and author. She was persecuted by the German state as an RAF terrorist .

Life

From 1968 Katharina de Fries was a co-founder of alternative children's shops in Berlin . The mother of five children and like-minded people participated in robberies to raise money for childcare. In 1980 she and an accomplice attempted an armed robbery on a money carrier in front of a supermarket. De Fries was arrested by the police. While in custody, she learned that she was pregnant. She suffered a miscarriage. Released on bail, she evaded the trial by fleeing to France.

De Fries initially lived undisturbed in Paris and published articles for the taz . However, on June 11, 1981, she was arrested at the instigation of the German government, which applied for her extradition to Germany. While in custody, she wrote the partially autobiographical novel Striped Sky . De Fries had meanwhile been assigned to the RAF in Germany . They have now been investigated on suspicion of membership in a terrorist group . This caused the French government not to extradite her because her crime was also considered to be of a political nature. De Fries applied for political asylum and was released.

She lived in western Normandy near the town of Granville . After her asylum application in France was rejected in 1986, Germany applied again for extradition. However, this failed again because the French court once again recognized the political dimension of their act. She worked as a writer and real estate agent until her death.
