The Cathedral of León ( Spanish Insigne y Real Basílica Catedral de la Asunción de la Bienaventurada Virgen María ) is an important church in Central America .

description

It was built between 1747 and 1860, inaugurated by Bishop Bernardo Piñol y Aycinena in 1860 and on November 20 of the same year by Pope Pius IX. raised to the minor basilica . It was the sixth cathedral in León , Nicaragua , and construction began under Bishop Isidro Marín y Figueroa (1744–48). After the fifth cathedral was demolished because of the darkness inside, today's cathedral is characterized by its brightness. It is praised as one of the cathedrals with the most beautiful natural interior lighting in Latin America. In the cathedral is u. a. the tomb of the eminent Nicaraguan poet and writer Rubén Darío . The roof of the cathedral is accessible and offers an excellent view of León and its surroundings.

The borders of the Diocese of Leon at that time extended from Tegucigalpa (capital of today's Honduras) to the borders of today's Panama . It was one of the largest dioceses of the Spanish colonial empire "en tierra firme" on the Latin American mainland. This presumably results in the size of the structure.

In 2011 the World Heritage Committee decided to add the cathedral as a cultural heritage site to the list of world heritage sites .
