Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Teresa of the Baby Jesus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Teresa of the Baby Jesus ( Arabic كاتدرائية القديسين يوسف وتيريزا الطفل يسوع) is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Baghdad of the Latin Church in Baghdad . It is located in the Hay al-Wahda district and was consecrated in 1984. It replaced the previous Latin St. Joseph Cathedral as the Latin cathedral church.

Location

The Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus is located in the Hay al-Wahda district (حي الوحدة, "Neighborhood of Unity") in the eastern Karrada of Baghdad on a cross street 120 m west of Street 42 and around 150 m southwest of Wathiq Square (ساحة الواثق).

history

The Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus in Baghdad was completed in 1984. It was initially called the Cathedral of St. Joseph, i.e. the same name as the St. Joseph Church in the Aqd an-Nasara district within the Shorja district in the ar-Rusafa district, which had previously served as a Latin cathedral . It was the third Catholic cathedral in the city to bear this name. Later the name was supplemented by St. Theresa of the Child Jesus , so that she is now called the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Teresa of the Child Jesus.

Architecture and equipment

The cathedral has three naves. The interior of the main nave is separated from the aisles by three arches with rectangular columns on each side. The images of the stations of the cross are arranged around the main nave . The upper and lower windows allow a lot of light into the interior of the church. There are also two rows of candlesticks. The choir can be reached via three steps. Like the high altar, it is covered with gray marble and above it is a dome.

Activities and facilities

Given the small number of Latin Catholics in Baghdad, there are few baptisms in the Church. Nevertheless, the Latin Church shows a comparatively large number of activities. To the right of the cathedral is an old people's home, to the left of it is a community center, the St. Joseph Center, which was inaugurated by Archbishop Paul Dahdah in 1998.

Diocese and bishop

The Latin Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus is the seat of the Archdiocese of Baghdad of the Latin Church within the Roman Catholic Church ( Archidioecesis Bagdathensis Latinorum ), which is directly subordinate to the Holy See. In 2012 the archbishopric comprised around 1000 believers in 16 parishes with 16 priests. In 2006 there were around 2500 believers in 14 parishes with 14 priests. Jean Benjamin Sleiman, who was born in Lebanon on June 30, 1946, has been Archbishop of Baghdad since November 29, 2000 .
