You Might Be the Killer is a 2018 American slasher film directed by Brett Simmons .

action

The summer camp supervisor Sam calls his best friend Chuck, who works the night shift in the nerd paradise Rings of Saturn. He is completely upset because a killer is up to mischief in his summer camp. Chuck tries to help him by going through all the slasher clichés. Chuck notices a detail. Eventually it turns out that Sam himself is the killer. however, he does not kill willingly, but is forced to do so by the power of a mysterious mask.

The two now reconstruct the previous murders. Sam told a ghost story by the campfire about a wood carver who carved a mask out of a cursed tree that drove him crazy. Then he went with one of the supervisors to the alleged grave of the wood carver. She put the mask on him for fun. Subsequently, Sam killed several other caregivers. Sam's old flame Imami was among those killed. Sam tries to destroy the mask, but he only injures himself.

Then the two try to find out who the final girl is. Sam would have to convince them that he was innocent and that it was a curse. The two identify Jamie as a final girl.

Sam tries to fight the power of the mask, but with Brad kills the last supervisor of the camp next to Jamie. But Imami has only faked her death and she and Jamie manage to imprison Sam, who then loses the mask. Together with Chuck he tries to convince the two of them to break the curse. While the two are arguing, however, Sam can pull the mask on and free himself. Imani and Jamie flee.

Imami, convinced that if she kills Jamie, she will be the final girl, attacks her mate. But she can defend herself and in turn kills Imami. Now Sam manages to remove the mask again. He and Jamie decide to bury the mask in the woodcarver's grave. When Jamie tries to put her inside, the mask takes possession of her and she kills Sam. Then she informs Chuck about Sam's death and runs into the forest.

Two years later, Chuck receives a call. Sam tells her in a panic that he is now undead.

background

Sam Sykes and Chuck Wenig came up with the idea for You Might Be the Killer on Twitter when they were talking about slasher films. The two fooled around and in the end something like a storyboard for the film emerged. The pair's threads went viral and would become the basis for the script. The script was written from the killer’s point of view and some clichés from Slaher and horror films are used. The story is not built linearly, but told with several time leaps. There are also some allusions to be found, especially in the interior of the nerd shop. The film series Friday the 13th and Final Destination had the most obvious influence on the script .

The film premiered on September 21, 2018 at the Fantastic Fest in Austin. It was then shown at other festivals and published on various streaming platforms. In Germany it was presented to a larger audience as part of the Fantasy Filmfest Nights 2019 . A German first publication has been announced for October 23, 2020 as a mediabook. In Austria, the film was released as a mediabook on December 16, 2019 .

reception

On film releases , Oliver Kube wrote: “With a comparatively small budget, an entertaining meta-horror comedy, spiced with a noticeable love of the subject, has succeeded, which not only works as a parody of the genre, but also as a slasher.” Oliver Armknecht, on the other hand, criticizes the second half of the film, in which the film would lose its appeal. Nevertheless, it is an "entertaining film for in between, especially for a blood-sucking audience, the horror comedy (...) comes at just the right time."
