The Cathedral of Cuiabá or the Cathedral Basilica of the Good Lord Jesus ( Portuguese Catedral Basílica do Senhor Bom Jesus ) is a Roman Catholic church in Cuiabá , the capital of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso . The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Cuiabá received a year after their ordination also the title of a minor Basilica .

history

The mother church of Cuiabá, which was consecrated to the Good Lord Jesus, was originally built in 1722, initially as a mud church in the " Pau-a-pique " style. On December 6, 1745, it became the seat of the Cuiabá prelature . On July 15, 1826, the church was elevated to a cathedral with the creation of the diocese of Cuiaba. In 1868 the tower and facade were redesigned, and the second tower was built in 1920.

As the city grew, the decision to build the new cathedral was made in the 1960s. The old one was blown up on September 25, 1968. The construction of the new cathedral had already started with the sanctuary. The church consecration took place on May 24, 1973. In the following year Pope Paul VI bestowed . her additionally the title of a minor basilica.

architecture

The church was designed by the architect Benedito Calixto in neo-Byzantine style . The single-nave room reaches a height of almost 40 meters at its highest point and is approximately 100 meters long. The large mosaic of Christ the King in the chancel is 20 meters high. The glass windows are designed with intense colors and geometric structures. The bishops and other personalities of the city are buried in the crypt .
