The Cathedral of Tropea is a former episcopal church built by the Normans in Tropea ( Calabria region ) in Italy . The church is now the co- cathedral of the Mileto-Nicotera-Tropea diocese .

history

The church, consecrated to St. Mary as St. Mary of Romania (Italian: Maria Ss. Di Romania), was built in the Norman style on the foundations of an older Byzantine church and was completed in the second half of the 12th century. At that time Tropea belonged to the Kingdom of Sicily, which was ruled by the Normans .

During the baroque period the church was redesigned. After the cathedral was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1905, it was completely restored between 1927 and 1931. A reconstruction of the original appearance was carried out and the baroque style elements were removed. The main altar is decorated with a portrait of Maria von Romania, who is said to have spared Tropea from the consequences of a severe earthquake in 1638. Relics of the holy martyr Dominica , the patron saint of Tropea, rest in a golden urn below the altar . The two-meter-high black crucifix from the 15th century is exhibited in a side chapel . A Staufer archway from the 13th century connects the cathedral with the neighboring bishop's palace, which today houses the diocesan museum.
