Vila Real Cathedral
The Cathedral of Vila Real ( Portuguese Sé de Vila Real , also Igreja de São Domingos ) is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Vila Real in the city of Vila Real in the Trás-os-Montes region in northern Portugal .
location
The former Dominican church and today's bishop 's church is located on the western edge of the old town of Vila Real, approx. 100 km east of Porto , at an altitude of approx. 460 m . The closest episcopal town is Lamego, a good 40 km to the south .
history
The church was built around the year 1425 as a monastery church of the Dominican Order outside the old city walls. In the 15./16. In the 16th century, parts were changed in the Manueline style . The choir facade with its four-storey bell tower (torre sineira) is a work from the middle of the 18th century (1742). With the abolition of all religious orders in 1834, the use as a parish church began; three years later it was damaged in a fire and then restored. In 1922, Pope Pius XI created the diocese of Vila Real and the church was elevated to the rank of cathedral.
architecture
The three-aisled mendicant order church built from granite has no west tower; the facade is stabilized by two buttresses . In the spandrels on both sides of the portal there are two barely identifiable figures. The interior of a transept church provided is covered by a wooden roof, but with leave capitals provided half-columns of the supports on a planned vaulting close.
Furnishing
The altarpiece transferred here from a closed Cistercian monastery is a work of the 18th century. The modern organ dates from 2016 and has 2192 pipes . Most of the church windows (vitrais) have modern glazing.
