The Nicholas Cathedral ( Liepājas Sveta Nikolaja pareizticīgo Jūras Cathedral ) in the Latvian city of Liepaja is a Russian Orthodox Marine Cathedral and located in the district Karosta .

Construction of the church began in 1901, and it was consecrated personally in 1903 by Tsar Nicholas II . It was dedicated to the saint of sailors, Saint Nicholas . The design is based on the Russian Orthodox churches of the 17th century. The construction management was carried out by the Petersburg architects Sergei Gelensowski and Vasili Kossjakow . The building was partly supported by the Russian Tsarist family, and the ruling family was also present at the first service in the church. It has a golden main and four golden side domes, which represent Jesus and four apostles. During the First World War , the most valuable items, such as the bells and the iconostasis, were moved to Russia.

During the Soviet era, the church was used as a sports hall and later as a cinema hall, with much of the interior being ruined. Only after Latvian independence was regained, St. Nicholas was re-consecrated as a church. The restoration began in 1994 and is largely complete today.
