George Reardon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Reardon (born May 23, 1930 in Hartford , Connecticut - † September 6, 1998 ) was an American doctor at a hospital in Hartford, Connecticut, who took advantage of his position to sexually abuse a large number of children . The Daily Mail speaks of hundreds of victims.

George Reardon was a doctor and later head of endocrinology at St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center , a Catholic-owned hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. He worked at the hospital from 1963 to 1993. There was early evidence of Reardon abuse of children. In a 1970 letter, the local medical community recommended Reardon to be less offensive. The letter was written by Joseph S. Sadowski, a colleague in the house. Reardon continued to maintain bed and camera equipment in his study at the hospital and invited children to his home. He told at least some of the victims that he was conducting a scientific study on growth.

Reardon was only forced to retire in 1993 when a number of victims testified before a medical commission that they were photographed naked and sexually abused as children of Reardon. Reardon died in 1998. About ten years after his death, the new owner of his former home in West Hartford came across a hiding place behind a wooden panel during renovations in 2007. He discovered Reardon slide magazines with a total of 50,000 35 mm images and more than 100 8 mm videos with child pornography . The pictures show children and young people who, as described in one case, are still laughing in the first pictures, but not in the others.

The police were able to identify several hundred victims in the images. In a press action from November 2007, the local police asked the victims to report. In March 2011, about 250 victims were known by name, many more were not identified. One victim reported having been molested at least 20 times.

A bill to remove the statute of limitations on damages claims in Connecticut should help the victims (House Bill 5473). However, he met with unanimous opposition from the state's three bishops, Archbishop Henry J. Mansell , Archdiocese of Hartford , Bishop William E. Lori , Diocese of Bridgeport and Bishop Michael R. Cote , Diocese of Norwich . In a letter addressed to the priests, in a pastoral letter to be read in front of the congregations for the congregations intended for April 10 and 11, 2010, and in letters to the congregation members, they complained that this law affected the assets of church organizations and work would burden:

"This bill would put all Church institutions, including your parish, at risk. (...) That is why it is important for you to join other Catholics across Connecticut in opposing this legislation. "

The bill was not passed. In 2010, 135 lawsuits were pending against the Archdiocese of Hartford and the hospital. The lawyers argue that the hospital operator was not responsible enough. However, due to the 30-year limitation period for those affected from the age of 18 in Connecticut, many victims are no longer able to claim damages and compensation for pain and suffering. At least 60 people are affected by the exclusion.
