Michael Richard Cote (born June 19, 1949 in Sanford ) is an American clergyman and Bishop of Norwich .

Life

Michael Richard Cote studied at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore and the Pontifical North America College in Rome. Pope Paul VI ordained him on June 29, 1975 in St. Peter's Basilica as a priest .

He studied canon law at the Catholic University of America and obtained a licentiate in this subject in 1981 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Portland and titular bishop of Cebarades on May 9, 1995 . The Bishop of Portland, Joseph John Gerry OSB , ordained him episcopal on July 27 of that year ; Co- consecrators were Robert Edward Mulvee , Coadjutor Bishop of Providence , and Raymond Leo Burke , Bishop of La Crosse . As a motto he chose Above All Charity (but above all love one another, Col.3.14) .

He was named Bishop of Norwich on March 11, 2003, and was installed in office on May 14 of the same year.

In the Bishops' Conference of the United States he has headed Region I since 2001 and was a member of the sub-commission for youth.
