Notice board with the chronicle of the Franciscan Sisters at the Marienhospital

The history of the foundation began more than 150 years ago. It was founded in 1850 by six Burtscheider citizens, the two pastors of the parishes St. Johann and St. Michael and the closely related Order of the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis under their leader Franziska Schervier . The occasion was in addition to the then-raging cholera - epidemics , popularly disease Burtscheider , also called concern for the health of citizens in Aachen and the surrounding area.

In 1985 the nuns entrusted the management of the Catholic Marienhospital Foundation to a board of trustees and a board of directors and limited themselves to pastoral care and visiting services in the hospital. On August 31, 2014, the Franciscan Sisters finally ended their engagement and their tasks were taken over by the Indian order Sisters of the little Flower of Bethany .

Marienhospital Aachen

After the Marienhospital Hospital was founded in 1853, it was expanded from ten beds to 321 beds today. The outpatient care for the poor and the sick was taken over by members of the sister order. However, the term hospital is only partially applicable here, as the Catholic Foundation is not only dedicated to illness and its alleviation. The Marienhospital with examination, treatment and care areas is rather a building block in a system which includes the accompaniment of people in all life situations and phases and where the word hospital (from Latin "hospites" = guests) is taken literally . In the inner park of the building complex, the Marienhospital is home to Aachen's only baby hatch .

Other foundation institutions

The former staff residence is adjacent to the Marienhospital. Here the conversion into a medical and social service center was made. Today it is operated as the "Practice Center at the Marienhospital". The foundation's other facilities include a residential and commercial building near the Marienhospital and the operation of two office buildings. The latter are used by the nursing school of the Marienhospital, which was founded in 1938 by the Franciscan Sisters and from which the "Educational Institute for Professions in Health Care" emerged. The “ Breast Center Aachen- Kreis Heinsberg ” is also subordinate to the foundation .

In the early 1980s, the Marienwohnstift Hans-Lorenz-Haus , a senior citizens' residential complex from a neighboring parish , was added as a further component of this system .

The foundation's actions found a conceptual further development in 1989 with the establishment of the Center for Health Promotion - FZS for short. Around 20,000 people actively take part in its 1300 or so courses every year. The offer is broad and ranges from childbirth preparation to baby swimming, Bobath courses and running training to rehabilitative cardiac sports groups.

The Service Center Home Care (SHP) was founded as a social station and mobile care service in 1993 . Due to the connection to the Marienhospital and well networked structures, it is growing continuously and is well positioned in the market.

In 1999, a retirement home in the Eilendorf district of Aachen was taken over. Comprehensive new construction and renovation measures at this senior citizen center in St. Severin were taken up with ongoing operations, the structures in the house were modernized and the synergy effects of the foundation were used sensibly. Up to the festive reopening in 2004, around eight million euros had been invested in the property to set up ten apartments for assisted living that is suitable for the elderly and disabled. Another retirement home in Büsbach was added later.

The Rehabilitation Clinic An der Rosenquelle has been one of the foundation institutions since 2002, which contributes to the completion of the foundation's offering.
