Kato Chorio ( Greek Κάτω Χωρίο ( n. Sg. )) Is a village in the municipality of Ierapetra on the Greek island of Crete . Together with the uninhabited settlements of Thrypti and Psari , the village forms the local community Kato Chorio ( Τοπική Κοινότητα Κάτω Χωρίου Topikí Kinótita Káto Choríou ) with 946 inhabitants (2011). The village is located in the narrowest part of Crete. Its strategic position, climate, abundant water resources and fertile soils are some of the reasons why the area has been populated for more than seven thousand years since the Neolithic.
A clay figure estimated to be between seven and eight thousand years old has been found here. A large find of Neolithic microplastics reveals the history and importance of the area around the village of Kato Chorio. It is said to have been one of the wealthiest villages in the province of Ierapetra, and the seven kilometers that separate it from the city made it an ideal suburb for many.
The center of the village is characterized by the large square (Platía) with plane trees, eucalyptus, pines and a few taverns and kafenia .
