The Katzenwerder was an island in the Elbe and is now a field name for the left bank of the Elbe in the area of Fermersleben .

It was located approximately at the level of the village of Fermersleben, which today belongs to the city of Magdeburg, and extended as a narrow island in the Elbe stream, facing north-south. It was closer to the left, the Fermersleber Elbe bank.

Due to the somewhat changed course of the river, the island, which was recorded in the 19th century, no longer exists today. The former approximate area of the island today belongs to the left bank of the Elbe and corresponds in parts to the area east of the later created lakes Salbker See I and Salbker See II . The name Katzenwerder is still used as a field name for larger areas on the banks of the Elbe in Fermersleber. The term cat could have resulted in the sense of inferior and denote the area as a poorly usable area.

For the construction of the tram from Buckau to Westerhüsen , the sand and gravel required were fetched from Katzenwerder's own gravel pit. Since 1919 there was a field railway for this purpose , which led from Katzenwerder to the main road.

The Fermersleben sports boat harbor, completed in 1960 and operated by the Buckau-Fermersleben water sports club , was built in the area of the parcels marked Katzenwerder . The bathing establishment and restaurant operated by the Michaelis family and the Fermersleben ferry were previously located here . From 1933 the historical chain steamer Gustav Zeuner was located in the area , which was moved and renovated in the Magdeburg trading port at the beginning of the 21st century .

The area of Katzenwerder is affected by flooding when the Elbe floods. The area was also flooded during the Elbe flood in 2013 in June 2013.
