The Salbker See I is a lake in the south of the city of Magdeburg . Although named after the Salbke district, the lake is located north of Salbke in the area of Fermersleben .

There are two islands in the lake. The shores of the lake slope gently. The lake reaches water depths of 1.5 to 3.0 meters, whereby the water level is influenced by the Elbe. The west Elbe cycle path runs east of the lake . North of Salbker See I, separated by a 100-meter-wide dam, is Salbker See II , which was created a little later .

The lake also serves as a fishing spot. There are, for example, pike and eel . There are also pikeperch , roach , lead , perch, eel and carp . In the 1980s it is reported that ice fishing for perch with the Mormyshka was very popular on the lake .

history

The lake, which is only a few 100 meters west of the Elbe , was created in the 20th century when gravel mining was stopped . Before that, there were the parcels of land belonging to Fermersleben and Salbke, Der Anger and Die Unterhorst , through which the brawn wound. For the construction of the tram from Buckau to Westerhüsen , the sand and gravel required were taken from Katzenwerder's own gravel pit and thus from the area around today's lake. Since 1919 there was a field railway for this purpose , which led from Katzenwerder to the main road.

During the Second World War, there was at times a light flak position in what is now the southern part of Salbker See I to secure the Salbker industrial companies .

Since 1972, the 32.6 hectare lake, other information only mentions 15 hectares, was used as bathing water through the establishment of a lido. In 2003, the city of Magdeburg discontinued the management of the bathing establishment on the south-western shore of the lake for cost reasons. The area was leased to the sports and cultural association MeriDian eV , the lease was terminated by the association on December 31, 2016.

The lake has also hosted motor boating events. On October 4, 1981, the final runs of the GDR championship in motorboat races took place on the lake. Afterwards, Bernd Bankowiak , Wolfgang Barth , Bernd Beckhusen , Bernhard Danisch and Harald Sterll were all GDR champions . Cup winner was Bernd Majewski .

When the Elbe floods in 2013 , the lake was flooded from June 5, 2013. The summer dike to the east of the lake, which protects the area from flooding from the Elbe up to certain high water levels, was damaged in several places. On June 20, 2013, a 75-year-old man was found dead from the lake. He had been missing since June 6, 2013 and had tried to ride his bike to his bungalow, which at that time was already 1.70 meters high flooded.

On August 31, 2019, at around 4:25 p.m., a 29-year-old man from Afghanistan drowned in the lake. After a search by the fire brigade and police, his body was found on the morning of September 5, 2019 at 8:45 a.m.
