Company history

Former DM Einstein department store, 2007

It had its origins on October 30, 1832 by David Moses Einstein and his wife Klara, née Nathan founded a company in a shop for women's fashion and haberdashery in Kapellenstrasse 1. In 1904, Daniel David Einstein moved to the newly built department store in Kapellenstrasse 6 at the northern end of Laupheim's market square. It was seen as defining the cityscape and is a listed building. After the First World War , David Moses' sons Ludwig and Max took over the business. Max's son, the writer Siegfried Einstein , called it “the largest department store between Ulm and Lake Constance ” in his memoirs .

On April 1, 1933 attacked partisans of the Nazis , the department store, smashed the shop windows and posted the Sturmabteilung at the entrances of the department store, which should hold for some time customers from shopping. After these incidents, the company's sales declined over the years. Whereas in 1933 the commercial capital was still 31,000 Reichsmarks (RM) , the books in 1936 only recorded a total of 6,000 RM. As a result, Ludwig Einstein emigrated to Switzerland in 1936 . His brother Max Einstein handled the sale to a Mr. Schurr. In March 1939, at the start of the winter sales , the department store was reopened as the Aryanized "Hans Schurr KG ".

In the period from March 2006 to spring 2019, the branch of a regional fashion chain was located in the building.
